Milestones – 50 years in a nutshell

  • May 1963, Capt. Maneyapanda N Nanjappa and President of the Gonikopal High School and committee member Sri. Chekkera B. Pemmaiah (a retired Range forest officer) met Sri. Deyanda. N. Devaiah, B.A.L.T., Rtd., D.E.O., Coorg District to request him to be the Head Master  of the Gonikoppal High School
  • Sri. Deyanda. N. Devaiah made it clear that he would accept their offer only if they assured him of establishing a college in Gonikoppal. He informed them that as per education survey conducted during his time, Gonikoppal had facilities to possess a college such as, Public conveyance, Feeding strength, Facilities for expansion, Public health and sanitation, and within the radius of 15 miles children could attend the college.
  • 01.07.1963 – Sri. Deyanda. N. Devaiah reported for duty at Gonikopal High School. Since then campaigning for the college started. Publications were issued in the local papers. Sri.Kuppana. C. Muddappa, President of Rural co-operative Bank assured that the Bank would give all possible help.
  • 20.10.1966 – An ad-hoc committee was formed in the name Gonikoppal College Committee. Capt. Maneyapanda N Nanjappa was the President. With the help of the money, some land was purchased for the college.
  • Sri. Chekkera. B. Muthanna, President of Virajpet Taluk Development Board, ventured to run a college under the Taluk Board Management. He paid the affiliation fees to the University of Mysore.
  • 04. 01.1968 – Mr.Chekkera. B. Muthanna, President of Virajpet Taluk Development Board, called a general meeting. 16 Board members, 40 Panchayath Chairmen and 32 other leaders attended the meeting at the Block office, Ponnampet. Mr.C.B. Muthanna explained the action he had taken. It was decided to run the proposed college public co-operation at Gonikoppal at the place located Gonikoppal College Committee. Coorg Cauvery Education Society was constituted. Sri.Ajjikuttira. N. Somaiah, was selected as the President of the college. Sri. Chekkera.B.Muthanna selected as the Vice – President and Sri. Deyanda. N. Devaiah, B.A.L.T. as the Honorary Secretary.
  • 28.01.1968 – First meeting of the Coorg Cauvery Education Society at Municipal Hall, Gonikoppal. Decided to start the Pre-University classes in the academic year 1968-69. Sri. Kollimada C. Mandanna was elected as correspondent. Decided to request the Registrar of Mysore University to depute their commissioner for inspection. Decided to register the society with the Registrar of Societies. Authorised to sign the memorandum of association of the society were :

President : Sri. A.N.Somaiah, Vice President :  Sri. C.B.Muthanna, Honorary Secretary : Sri. D.N.Devaiah, Correspondent : Sri. K.C.Mandanna, Directors :  Sri. P.M.Uthappa, Rao Bahadur K.T.Uthappa,   Sri. C.P.Kushalappa, Sri. M.N.Nanjappa,  Sri. C.B.Pemmaiah.

Decided to Print receipt books.

  • 18.02.1968 – Bye law draft of the Coorg Cauvery Education Society was approved. Receipt book format was approved.
  • 14.04.1968 – Decided to request Gonikoppal High School committee to provide accommodation in their new building for three years for holding of PUC classes.
  • 26.05.1968 – Decided to open PUC with HEC HEP & HEG and seek University permission. Decided to apply to Agriculture Income Tax and Central Income Tax departments for tax exemption.
  • 16.06.1968 – College named as “Cauvery College”. Decided to advertisement for staff in papers. Fee for students fixed at Rs. 200/ – payable in two installments. Decided to go for a collection drive, as Coffee Bonus had been disbursed. Teams of persons were named for different places for collection purpose. Receipt books were distributed. The teams were,

  • 06.08.1968 – College teaching staff was appointed. Sri. K.C. Panchalinge Gowda, M.A., was deputed as the principal of this college the Vice – Chancellor of the Mysore University. Decided to print membership application form. Admission fee for members fixed at Re.1.25 paise. Decided to start military science in PU and start First year Bachelor of Arts in the year 1969. Decided to acquire required lands and decided to construct required structures for the purpose of establishing the college. Appointed staff were,

  • 06.10.1968 – Decided to start a hostel for men students.
  • 12.01.1969 – Ratified agreement to purchase of 1.00 acre of land from Smt. V.L.Gangamma. Decided to purchase 3.50 acres from Sri. Kuppanda T Muthanna.
  • 12.01.1969 – Decided to get membership of “The Mysore University Affiliated Colleges Association”
  • 09.02.1969 – Decided to print Bye laws of the society and the college Prospectus.
  • 13.04.1969 – Decided to request Gonikoppal High School to provide their Hall for college purposes.
  • 13.04.1969 – Decided to open ladies hostel and request Mahila Samaj to run Mahila Hostel.
  • 20.07.1969 – First selection committee constituted – President Sri. AN. Somaiah, Correspondent Sri. K.C. Mandanna and Principal Sri. K.C. Panchalinge Gowda.
  • 20.07.1969 – Decided to nominate Sri. KC Poovanna, Chartered Accountant as the auditor of the society.
  • 19.12.1969 – Dr. Nagaraj R Nadig, Architect, Advance Techno consult of Bangalore visited the college and after inspecting the campus site he agreed to prepare the Master plan and estimates for the buildings.
  • 19.12.1969 -Decided to Install a telephone for the society at Gonikoppal High School.
  • 22.01.1970 – an appeal in English and Kannada  sent to all the societies, organizations, planters and other leaders requesting financial assistance.
  • 08.03.1970 – foundation  stone  for the college Building laid Sri. D. Javare Gowda, Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University.
  • 01.05.1970 – “Bhoomi”Pooja” for the college building Mr. K. Narasimha Murthy, I.A.S., Deputy Commissioner of Coorg.
  • 01.06.1970 –  Student selection committee constituted – 6 governing council members to screen the students who seek admission to the college.
  • 08.07.1970 – Decided to open account in Vijaya bank Gonikoppal.
  • 08.07.1970 – Decided to buy 4.50 acres from Maneyapanda family.
  • 08.07.1970 – Decided to  construct staff quarters.
  • 14.07.1970 – ancillary building with five rooms was opened Rao Bahadur Kodira .T. Uthappa under the Chairmanship of Rao Bahadur Pandanda A. Chengappa. 
  • 14.07.1970 – The land  purchased the High School was  given to Cauvery Education Society as a gift Gonikopal High School.
  • 20.04.1971 – Started Science subjects in PU college.
  • 01.06.1971 – electrification for the building.
  • 01.06.1971 – tender to construct Principal’s quarters.
  • 22.03.1972 – Construct Cycle stand for students and ‘D’ group employee quarters.
  • 1972 – Building inaugurated at Gonikoppal
  • 1973 – Science Block inaugurated at Gonikoppal
  • 1973 – Construction of Principal’s quarters in Gonikoppal started
  • 18.08.1972 – Decided to place tablets with names of donors.
  • 06.08.1974 – Sports room and Students cooperative society started.
  • 16.08.1975 – Library building inaugurated  Gen. K.M. Cariappa (building donated Sri.Mandepanda.M. Appaiah, Planter, Wodderahalli Estate, Siddapur, in memory of his father late Rao Bahadur Mandepanda S. Mandanna).
  • 02.09.1977 – performed Bhoomipooja of the Rao Bahadur Kodira. T. Uthappa memorial Block donated his sons. This block is now being used as staff rooms and class rooms. Also performed Bhoomipooja of the Science Block donated the consolidated Coffee Estates, Pollibetta, in memory of Mr. Iver Bull.
  • 20.09.1977 – Statue of “Godess Cauvery” was installed in the college garden at Gonikoppal. (gift Sri Mapangada S.Somaiah, Planter, Nittoor. The granite rock statue was carved Sri. Appaneravanda Kiran Subbaiah).
  • 21.10.1977 – Decided to have an agreement with Government for grant in aid.
  • 10.01. 1978 – Sri. Balladichanda P Bopaiah planted the seed of starting a college in Virajpet.
  • 21.07.1979 – Decided to start Kavery Womens’ College in Virajpet. Constituted a team to proceed  with the work consisting of President Sri.C.B.Muthanna. Sri. Palecanda A Muthappa, and Sri. Balladichanda P Bopaiah.
  • 22.10.1979 – Committee constituted to proceed with finalizing acquisition of land consisting of President Sri.C.B.Muthanna, Correspondent Capt.M.N Nanjappa, and Sri. A.K Nachappa.
  • 11.12.1979 – Cauvery Statute at Gonikoppal unveiled.
  • 11.12.1979 –Rao Bhadhur Kodira Uthappa memorial building Inaugurated General K,M Cariappa and Sri.Veerendra Hegde, Dharmadhikari, Shri. Kshethra Dharmasthala.
  • 1979 – Construction of Staff quarters in Gonikoppal I block
  • 1979 – 80  started two years JOC on plantation crops and management.
  • 19.02.1980 –Ivor bull memorial science block inaugurated Prof. K.S Hegde Vice Chancellor of Mysore University.
  • 1980 – Construction of Polytechnic building at Gonikoppal
  • 16.09.1980 – Agreement to purchase 9.40 acres for Virajpet college from Keethiyanda Belliappa and brothers.
  • 12.10.1980 – Inauguration of Kavery Women’s College, Virajpet   Sri. Gundu Rao, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka .
  • 26.02.1982 – Chiriyapanda P Kushalappa memorial auditorium in Gonikoppal was inaugurated Pejawar  Sri Sri. Viswesha Thirtha Sripadangalwaru.
  • 11.09.1982 – Rules with regard to student’s association framed.
  • 27.05.1983 – decided to name the Virajpet campus as Pandanda Subbamma Campus.
  • 17.09.1985 – limit of over draft with Canara Bank, Madikeri was raised on the personal guaranty of President Dr.M.M Chengappa and Vice-President Sri.K.A Chinnappa.
  • 18.02.1986 – decided to open a polytechnic with computer science and telecommunication and commercial practice. Bank Guarantee sought from Coorg Education fund for obtaining loan to establish the Polytechnic.
  • 14.08.1986 – Polytechnic classes started. Principal Sri. C.B.Shasthri of Cauvery College Gonikoppal appinted principal of Polytechnic till another is appointed.
  • 13.04.1987 – approved the agreement with the Government for receiving Aid to Virajpet college employees.
  • 16.05.1989 – decided to open hostel for students of Polytechnic, Pre-University and Degree colleges.
  • 30.04.1992 – decided to construct at Virajpet , college building first floor, pump house, security quarters and in Gonikoppal first floor of Polytechnic building.
  • 1992 – Basket Ball cement Court constructed in Virajpet with funds donated Consolidated Coffee Limited, Pollibetta.
  • 1993 – Silver jubilee celebrations
  • 05.06.1993 – decided to start Bachelor of Business Management department at Gonikoppal.
  • 21.04.1994 – Volkart Foundation India Trust, Bombay donation Rs. 5,00,000/-.
  • 04.09.1997 – Dr. Krishnadas, a scientist hailing from Virapet executes a will in which he bequeaths all his property in Virajpet to the society.
  • 2001 – Post Graduation Center – construction of I floor
  • 03.11.2003 – Alumni association law framed.
  • 09.08.2004 – decided to computerize the office and train staffs.
  • 14.08.2004 – decide to construct an open air auditorium
  • 27.01.2005 – 31.01.2005 NAAC peer team visit to Gonikoppal and Virajpet colleges.
  • 2002-3 – decided to have a center for Karnataka State Open University  in Gonikoppal College.
  • Decided to have Rain water harvesting at Gonikoppal.
  • 24.09.2005 – decided to have a computer lab and a computer course department in Gonikoppal.
  • 26.11.2005 – tender for construction of Kausthubha Hall in Virajpet.
  • 29.05.2006 – decided to have uniform for all students of all institutions
  • 13.08.2006 – decided to establish computer lab for Pre University College at Gonikoppal.
  • 2006 – Inauguration of open auditorium
  • 07.05.2007 – decided to install a statue of Goddess Cauvery in Virajpet campus.
  • 25.07.2007 –  decided to establish a computer lab in Virajpet
  • 31.08.2007 – decided to construct an auditorium in Virajpet and request JRT Tata Trust for funds
  • 10.01.2008 – statue of Goddess Cauvery in Virajpet installed
  • 03.03.2008 – decided to have co-education in Kavery women college, Virajpet
  • 03.2008 – Decided to establish Bachelor of Business Administration department in Virajpet College.
  • 08.03.2008 – Decided to establish Bachelor of Computer Application department in Gonikoppal.
  • 29.04.2008 – Code of conduct for the employees framed and approved.
  • 29.04.2008 – name of Kavery Women’s College at Virajpet changed to Cauvery College, Virajpet.
  • 21.07.2007 – Pre University Course got bifurcated from the Composite college establishments through the Government Order throughout Karnataka and they came under the Pre-University Board. Hence the establishment got bifurcated as, Cauvery College, Gonikoppal,  Cauvery College, Virajpet, Cauvery Pre-University College, Gonikoppal,  Cauvery Pre-University College, Virajpet.
  • 21.07.2007 – Decided to have a canteen in Virajpet campus.
  • 22.09.2008 – Decided to have NSS wing in Cauvery Pre-University College, Gonikoppal.
  • 15.12.2009 – decided to  install CCTV cameras both colleges.
